Registration

team formation

Forming teams each season is one of the most complex responsibilities of the Club Committee.

We must balance multiple factors at the same time, including:

  • Age eligibility under SPBA rules

  • Skill level and playing experience

  • Competition grading requirements

  • Representative player points (where applicable)

  • Team size limits

  • Coach availability

  • Player development pathways

  • Friendship requests

Every decision affects not just one player, but an entire team and often multiple teams within the same age group.

Because of this, it is not possible to satisfy every individual preference while still maintaining fair, competitive and development-focused teams.

Does my child need to attend grading sessions?

Yes, attendance at grading is strongly encouraged, particularly for new players or players changing age groups.

If a player cannot attend, team placement will be based on:

  • Previous season performance

  • Coach feedback

  • Available team positions

Can my child request to play with friends

Yes, Requests may be submitted during registration, but cannot be guaranteed.

Team formation prioritises:

  1. Fair and balanced grading

  2. Development pathways

  3. Competition integrity

How many players are in each team?

Typically 8–10 players per team.
This ensures:

  • Adequate court time

  • Cover for absences

  • Competitive viability

what if my child is new to basketball?

New players are very welcome.

We assess new players during grading and place them in an appropriate division focused on development.

WHEN DO REGISTRATIONS OPEN & CLOSE?

Registrations typically open 4–6 weeks before the start of each season (Summer and Winter).

Spots are limited and teams are capped. early registration is strongly recommended.

registrations RECEIVED WILL be placed on a waitlist.

CAN MY CHILD REGISTER AFTER A SEASON HAS STARTED?

POSSIBLY, IT DEPENDS ON THE AVAILABLE POSITIONS WITHIN TEAMS, COMPETITION GRADING STATUS AND SPBA REGULATIONS.

iF TEAMS ARE ALREADY FULL, YOUR CHILD WILL BE PLACED ON THE WAITLIST AND INCLUDED AS PART OF THE CLUB WHERE POSSIBLE. WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEEK TO FORM ADDITIONAL TEAMS IF NUMBERS ALLOW

WE WILL CONTACT YOU IF A POSITION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

FEES

What are the player registration fees?

All players must register with the SPBA. Fees are set by SPBA and may vary annually.

How much are weekly game fees?

The SPBA charges a per-team game fee each season; how this is split per player depends on team size.

Is there a club fee?

Yes — a small club levy helps cover operating costs (equipment, administration, PRIZES)

Are there any other costs?

Basketball Victoria and Basketball Australia levy annual insurance/admin fees that are charged via SPBA.

What are the forfeit fees?

Fees apply if a team forfeits a game. Longer advance notice generally reduces the penalty.

AGE DIVISIONS & representative (rep) rULES

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT AGE DIVISIONS?

Typical age divisions include U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, and senior competition — determined by SPBA guidelines.

HOW DOES GRADING WORK?

TEAMS ARE GRADED INTO DIVISIONS BASED ON SKILL LEVEL TO PROMOTE FAIR COMPETITION

WHEN IS GRADING CONDUCTED?

GRADING OCCURS AT THE START OF EACH SEASON AND MAY HAVE MULTIPLE PHASES

WHY is A REP POINTS RULE USED?

To help maintain competitive balance, representative players are allocated points that influence team eligibility in U14 and younger divisions.

WHAT IF MY CHILD PLAYS REP ELSEWHERE?
